The Snow and the Season are Coming to an End
The season is drawing to a close now and the snow is retreating. Everywhere we go the rivers are raging with meltwater and there are waterfalls spouting out of the side of the mountains. The pistes in Avoriaz are holding up ok and still all passable, but the final run at the end of ‘Crot’ directly to the car park is very patchy now and we may have used it for the last time. Today we’re having rain, as forecast, and hoping that above 2000 metres altitude it’s cold enough for a bit of snow which would be a nice bonus.
On the Morzine side of the valley the slopes look wrecked. The pisteurs are very good at finding and scraping snow together during the night to just cover the grass and earth enough but now even that looks impossible and there’s a big muddy scar down the middle of the main piste into the town.
We’ve been trying to get on the slopes a bit earlier in the day. Most of the pistes get ‘bashed’ flat during the night but, through the course of the day get slushier in the sun and carved into big bumps (mostly by skiers!). You can go much faster and more easily when it’s nice and flat and don’t get such a wet bottom when you stop and sit down! Earlier starts mean we come off the mountain earlier too and have been able to enjoy the warm sunshine we’ve had for the last week – I even got out my flip flops!

Oh well, at least you won’t have to drag yourselves away while there’s still lots of snow!
