Snow, rain, soup and beer
We went out in Morzine to meet up with Mike and Sarah for a few drinks. They spent the day on the mountain being guided by a friend who showed them some off-piste ski runs with some do-able cliff drops. It sounded like somewhere I had been taken when in Avoriaz a few years ago. Mike and Sarah said one day soon we could go riding together and they would show us those runs, which will be good.
The next day we stayed in the St Jean D’Aulps campsite (Camping Caravaneige Le Solerey) to do laundry, charge up our batteries and get some internet time. We didn’t go quite as crazy as last time, when we didn’t go to bed until 6 in the morning due to being on the internet all night, I think it was 2am when we turned in for the night. The next day, once we had completed our laundry and then driven from the campsite to the Les Prodains car park it was 3:30 and the car park was totally full. So there was no chance of snowboarding as I had hoped.
That night we parked up in the Avoriaz car park with Mike and Gwyd as we had all planned to go out in Avoriaz to Le Bar Rond, it was Mike’s birthday and he was hoping to get a few hours DJing on the decks. He did and it was a thoroughly good night. It made a nice change to be surrounded by French people rather than English - bars in Morzine seem to be full of English. We met two French guys that work in Avoriaz and live in campervans in the Avoriaz carpark.
Mike joined us for snowboarding - it made a nice change to have an extra person to snowboard with. About half way down our home run it started raining. By the time we got back to the van our clothes were soaked through.
The weather forecast was pretty terrible so we had planned to go shopping that night, then drive to get gas the next day. Mike was making a big saucepan of soup and persuaded us there was loads to go around, so we put it any vegetables we had left, ate with them and drank beers until the wee hours. We were also able to take all our wet gear and dry it over the wood-burning stove.
Had loads of snow overnight and had a very good day on the mountain – especially when we had thought we wouldn’t even get out!. Mike invited us over to his van for dinner as there was still a great deal of soup left from the previous night. The soup was very thick so once a little more water had been added it was a full pan again. After quite a few beers we decided to go home, earlier than the previous night as we wanted to be up at a reasonable time for snowboarding the following day.
