Our Last Week
Started today with a great day’s boarding with Julie and Steele. The sky stayed dry for once, despite some ominous looking clouds, and we got some sunshine too. It doesn’t look like we’re due any more snow, but we did get some last week on the higher slopes so we consider ourselves pretty lucky.
The home run that takes us directly to the car park is definitely finished now. Although we went that way today it involved quite a bit of walking with boards off. Yesterday I was a bit more reckless and crossed a patch of mud and have some impressive gouges in my board base to show for it. Ouch.
The resort feels very different now. A lot of the hotels and chalets are closed so most of the only people skiing or boarding now are locals or seasonnaires. No lift queues whatsoever! And the pistes were still bashed during the night but stayed flat much longer today. We’ve been spending more time in the Arare snowpark which is the biggest in Avoriaz, with the most challenging features. Inspired and compelled by Julie’s bravado I did two blue jumps today. And Simon did a red! The warmer conditions make for slushy snow which is much softer if you fall so you can go a little bit more wild. Excercising caution though of course! My first attempt on the blue jump was so slow and careful I didn’t even make it up to the top.
We drove into Morzine this afternoon to get all our chores out of the way - shopping, recycling, toilet-emptying, more shopping, getting petrol and stopping off for internet! Such a hard life we’re leading. Now we’re all sorted and stocked up. As long as the weather obliges we’re having a bbq in the car park with Steele and Julie. We must also try to squeeze in a hair cut each before we head back as we’re both looking pretty scruffy.
Next Tuesday we make the Channel Tunnel crossing back to the UK, where we will be resident for the next two months minimum. We’re really looking forward to seeing family and friends and will be in contact very soon to arrange some visits. (Well maybe a day before we arrive on your doorstep - you know what we’re like!) We’ll try to get some photos on before then of us flying through the sky!
