Not an ‘Abondance’ of snow

We’ve had some continuous internet access for a change and not a lot to tell so I thought I’d share this…

Browsing for some information on the Portes Du Soleil ski area that we’re based in I searched for ‘Abondance’. I should have looked for ‘La Chapelle d’Abondance’ as that’s the ski area on the map. However, the results I got for Abondance were quite interesting….

Abondance ski resort closes

Last season was a particularly poor one for snow in the Alps, but this year has been much better; we even have the prospect of more snow in the next few days to (hopefully) see most of the higher pistes skiable through till the end of the season.

I know many people are sceptical about global-warming, but this desicion can’t have been taken lightly and must be solidly based on scientific fact. Knowing Morzine (a much bigger resort) has a population increase from 3000 resident to 130000 during the ski season the affect on trade in the town must have been devastating

The weather in the Alps is certainly extreme and not always predictable. Today we awoke to heavy rain. Later we walked to the shop in t-shirts, then sat in the sun for an hour in temperatures of over 20ยบ. Late afternoon brought booming thunder like tanks firing in Bovington, accompanied by big hailstones. Since then it’s just been rain! Checking the forecast constantly while we’re online and waiting for that snow to repair the damage to the pistes…..

I realised I’d been suffering withdrawal when you hadn’t posted for several days, even after your warning. Not quite like missing cigarettes (I say that as an ex-smoker!), but I was certainly looking forward to this one.

I wonder what happens to the inhabitants of Abondance? Perhaps they do what you are doing - heading for places with more snow.

The weather here is also warm for the time of year, but with two snow showers lately, sharp frosts and mostly sunny days it is more confused than anything. Our garden plants are confused too, flowering in the autumn or early spring. So Global warming is coming, but in fits and starts.

    Best Wishes,
    Adam, and Helen too
