My Birthday
On my birthday on Monday we took a little outing up to Avoriaz. I went up on the Les Prodains Gondola, while Simon took the chairlift straight up onto the pistes. It was a beautiful sunny day - after just walking across the resort my face was hot and my eyes stinging - should have worn my snowboarding goggles!
I treated myself to the Sunday paper which I took to Changabang cafe/bar and read over some chips and beer. Changabang is the coolest place to be for lunch in Avoriaz and quickly got very busy - they do great sandwiches, fries and nachos - but not somewhere you often find poor seasonaires buying a big lunch!
We stocked up on good things at the supermarket and headed back to the chalet for a fancy dinner, where we got a call out of the blue. Welsh Mike, who we met out here during our first season, is back in Morzine with his girlfriend Linda.
We last saw Mike at a secluded park-up near Nerja on the south coast of Spain almost two years ago! They came up and shared our very fine fish pie (made by Simon) for dinner. They’re here for a couple of months or the rest of the season in Mike’s van, ‘The Black Pearl’ so we will definitely see more of them. The next day they came up and sessioned Simon’s kickers in the back garden for a while - getting their snowboarding legs before buying passes for the mountain.
I almost forgot - Simon sneaked off in the morning when I thought he was snowboarding and bought me a surprise birthday present which he presented to me carefully wrapped in newspaper. I had three Savoie sausages - a really nice treat that we love but rarely have. They are Goat’s cheese, Beaufort and Cepe mushroom and now I’ve remembered I’m going to go and have some for my lunch.
This week also saw my return to the doctor. This time they didn’t x-ray my wrist first, just sawed my big plaster off straight away (well, after a 3 hour wait!). It’s a relief to get some movement back in my elbow, but a bit of a surprise that my thumb is now plastered straight so I can’t grip. 3 weeks before another x-ray and probably 4 weeks in the plaster so plenty of cheese and chocolate milk in the meantime. Hooray!!

Get some red meat into you! Calcium is good but your bod needs high protein for building it into bone growth.
