Internet (wifi) access from campervan
On the way to work this morning I got thinking about internet access and how the hell are we going to get it while away. I was hoping that we could get a campsite with wifi or just do work offline in the campervan and then spend an hour in an internet cafe with wireless internet to upload work and post to the blog. The other option may be to connect to a wireless network such as BT Openzone as they also have access points in Europe through various partner networks.
None of those options are ideal. Satellite broadband seemed like the only solution but I’m sure it costs more than £2,000 to just get setup never mind the ongoing costs.
So this morning I searched the internet to find out if you could get a powerful wifi antenna and then hope we find an open wireless access point somewhere in the vicinity of our campervan. Instead of finding powerful antennas which would increase the single by 50-75% I found a number of sites that give you the plans to create your own high gain wifi antenna!
Some of the home made wifi antennas allow you to access wifi from 5km away or even more! plus they cost only pounds to make. So in the next few weeks I’m going to make one of these for my self and see what results I get.
Here is one such site to give you an idea http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/
