Inspiration from the Reverend

This has to be a good forum to spread the word!

The inspiration for our trip came from a few sources, but one in particular which we can’t stop sharing with family, friends and anyone who will listen.

We saw Reverend and the Makers for the first time at Lowlands festival in Holland. During a break in our schedule of bands we knew we wanted to see, we stumbled (drunkenly I expect) into the tent where they were in full flow. I think the first attraction for Simon was the Yorkshire accent - a band talking his language! But as we watched it was clear that the frontman, John (the Reverend) was just having a great time doing his thing - by being totally un-demanding of the audience he seemed to command attention even more.

When we came home to Dorset and had to slip straight back into ‘normal’ life we were listening to ‘RATM’ constantly and the lyrics of some of the songs, playing LOUD in the car on the way to work, had us both thinking how this was BORING! And surely we could do more than this…

Heavyweight Champion of the World

And now…

That she’s older
As the embers of romance
Fade to mortgages and leccy bills
Bein’ comfortable and that
Nobody told her
That she’d ever reach the stage
Where her husband bores her
Or she lies about her age

He’s compromising
At least he’s got a job for life
Get born, get schooled, get job, get car
Pay tax and find a wife
And on that note
The end can’t come too soon
If you’re not living on the edge
You take up too much room

I could’ve been a contender
I could’ve been a someone
Caught up in the rat race
Feeling like a no-one
Put me in the papers
With the money and the girls
I could’ve been The Heavyweight Champion of the World

At school he used to dream about
Being Bruce Lee
But the need for chops on the Manor top
Aint all that great you see
And so he gave up
On his black belt and First Dan
As near as he got to China
Was a week in Camber Sands

It’s boring it’s boring
It might put you to sleep
The same old routine repeating week after week
And you work harder, work harder
Cause you’re told that you must
You must earn a living
You must earn a crust

To be like everybody else
Be like everybody else
Be like everybody else

I could’ve been a contender
I could’ve been a someone
Caught up in the rat race
Feeling like a no-one
Put me in the papers
With the money and the girls
I could’ve been The Heavyweight Champion of the World

Never knew all the words to this song… There are some serious “quotes for life” in it!! Hmmm… room for one more maybe?!!!
