Finally escaped the car park to stock up
It’s a very good job we made it to the supermarket on Monday because the snow dumped down again all day on Tuesday. The forecast said about 5cm over the course of Tuesday day and night, yet it didn’t stop from the time we woke until we slept and I reckon we had well over a foot. It was quite amusing watching people returning to their parked cars in the afternoon after skiing and having to dig them out and work out how to put their snow chains on.
We could be smug and stay put because we planned and executed a trip to the larger supermarket and petrol station the day before to stock up. Good timing as the roads were just a bit wet and slushy. Champion – the supermarket in St. Jean d’Aulps was heaving – mostly with English people (it felt a bit like being back at Asda at Christmas!). Busier than we can remember it ever being last year. My theory is that, with the recession, people are opting for self-catering to save a few pounds on their holiday. It’s worth taking a drive up the road to the larger store as the range is much bigger and some of the prices are a few cents cheaper.
We got diesel for the van at a very pleasantly-suprising 96 cents per litre, and filled the jerrycan with petrol for the generator. Aahh the ‘trusty’ Kipor generator…. Well it’s working right now but being very temperamental. Each time we’ve used it in the last couple of days it gives up after about half an hour saying it’s ‘overloaded’. We have realised that 1000w only gives us 4 amps of power to share between laptops, leisure battery, phones etc so we’re making sure there’s only two things on charge at a time. Even then it still gives up sometimes, so it’s running on full choke, rather than nice and quiet low revs.
