All We Want Is A Room Somewhere (in Morzine)

My second visit to the medical centre for an xray confirmed that the break is correctly set in the cast. Click here to have a look! I will need to return in ten days for a further xray to check progress and again to have a smaller cast put on. Of course, that’s assuming we’re still in France…

We’ve spent most of the last three days looking at lists and noticeboards, making calls and asking everyone we can think of about accomodation for the rest of the season. We’ve tried the tourist information centre, estate and letting agents, websites, forums and asking everyone we meet.

On the day I got plastered - in the cast on my arm! - I thought my snowboarding was over for the whole season but I have now read online about several people who have snowboarded after breaking a wrist - some after just a few days! It is likely that my travel insurance will not cover me for boarding when the doctor has certified me unable to do sports for 45-60 days so I will certainly need several weeks off. The prospect of sitting in the van most of every day, trying to keep warm is not attractive so we’re searching for options.

As the possibility of a room or apartment for the rest of the season (that isn’t extortionate) started looking slim we considered staying at the nearby campsite for a few weeks until my cast is off. At least there we would have endless electricity to use our oil-filled radiator and wifi so I could work and be in contact with the outside world when Simon goes snowboarding. We have visited the campsite twice and telephoned but not managed to catch the owners yet.

There is one also a small chance of a studio apartment for the rest of the season. The lady at the agency has not managed to contact the owner yet to see if they would consider a seasonal let; also we haven’t asked about parking a big van, that’s not necessarily a deal-breaker. We will return to the agency tomorrow.

So, I’m feeling more positive about getting back on a snowboard before the snow thaws and - as much as I’m missing my people in the UK I think we should be able to stay in the Alps rather than heading north to cross back to England. In a couple of days we’re going about 35 miles to Chamonix to meet friends of Simon’s for a few days and by then we hope to have a plan.

Update - have an offer of a room in a chalet about 8 miles out of town - sounds fantastic with a climbing wall in the living room! Only drawback is the distance - Simon would have to put snow chains on to drive into town every time he wants to snowboard. Also waiting to hear about an appartment much closer to Morzine - self-contained oe bedroom though so more expensive - and NO climbing wall!

    Oh dear Lucy….. Did this fall happen before or after the drink!!!! Never mind pet you get Simon doing all the washing up!

    I hope you find somewhere more comfortable soon, I can imagine how inconvenient it must be trying to lead a normal life with only one hand;
    Believe it or not we have so many people here falling down in the snow and ending up the A & E due to the snow here!
